Relieving that irritable feeling in your tummy

There is never a good time to talk about bowels and their function, but with many people suffering problems with their gut it is not a topic to be ignored. In homeopathy we have a hearty interest in your bowel movements, as this is a good indication of physical and emotional health.

So, if you are suffering with frequent bouts of constipation and this may be alternating with diarrhoea; or you feel sluggish, bloated or gassy after certain foods or you’re getting continuous abdominal pains, all these could  be a sign that you are suffering with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Irritable Bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional disorder of the gut. A functional disorder means there is a problem with function of the part of the body, but there is no abnormality in the structure. So, in IBS, the function of the gut is upset, but all parts of the gut look normal, even when looked under a microscope. IBS can affect anyone at any age, but it commonly develops in young adults and teenagers. IBS is twice as common in women as in men.

The symptoms of IBS can be: pain and discomfort around parts of the abdomen; the pain usually comes and goes; the length of each bout of pain can vary; the pain will often relieve once a stool or wind has passed; there can be bloating or swelling of your abdomen; and your stools can vary. Such that, some people have bouts of diarrhoea, and some have bouts of constipation. The stools may become small or sometimes watery or ribbony, or there may be mucus mixed with the stools.

IBS can be caused by a number of factors, such as: liver overload, food intolerances, emotions, hormone imbalance etc. So by changing a few things, such as your diet (that could be eliminating obvious trigger foods, drinking water and exercising regularly), taking a good quality pro-biotic and drinking peppermint tea or Aloe Vera juice, may help address the problem by soothing the gut lining and prevent spasm.

I see a lot of clients with IBS symptoms and because all IBS symptoms are different, it is best to see a qualified Homeopath for a full, individualized homeopathic consultation, which will address your specific emotional and physical symptoms that could be worsening your condition.
